A quick tea-break read, the lighthouse existed from 1889-1960 and was in Chesapeake Bay, it was notable for an unexplained death and having suffered from friendly fire. It was dismantled in 1960 and replaced by an automated beacon.

Ulman Owens was found dead 31st March, 1931. He was found dead at the station with blood and signs of a struggle, yet no wounds were found on the body and the subsequent cause of death was listed as natural. Investigators found that he had been unwell in the days before his death, and there was a chance he had suffered a fit which killed him. However, a report from a local captain says that he saw a vessel cruising without it’s running lights in the area. There was a suggestion it might have been a rum runner and a later autopsy revealed Owens had a cracked skull. It is possible that he was subjected to a violent end. However the cause of natural death has remained as the autopsy also revealed an enlarged heart which suggested a heart attack.

The US Navy regularly used the nearby hulk of an old ship, Hannibal, for target practise. 19th February, 1957, 3 of the ASDN Skyraiders bombed the light mistaking it for Hannibal. It did enough damage to have to have the four keepers removed until the damage was repaired.

An unoccupied territory with 4-20 non-residents who are from the US Government, The Nature Conservancy and then another mix of rotating researchers are the only people that generally access this part of the world.

In 9174, Palymyra was the site of a double murder, of a wealthy San Diego couple. ‘Mac and Muff’ aka Malcolm Graham and his wife Eleanor were the victims. Duane Walker and his girlfriend, Stephanie Stearns, were blamed for it and arrested when they came to Honolulu that year. They were in the Graham’s boat the Sea Wind.

No bodies were located at the time and so they were unable to trial them for murder, they were both convicted for the theft of the yacht however. Then six years later a partially buried, corroded chest with the remains of Eleanor were discovered.

Duane Walker and Stephanie Stearns were arrested again, this time Duane was convicted and served from 1985-2007 for the crime. He died 26th April 2010 and Stearns was acquitted.

Lucedio Abbey, located near Trino, north-west Italy was founded in 1124, and one of the earliest Cistercian monasteries in Italy. The abbey was secularised in 1784, and today the abbey buildings are part of a nice farm. There is restoration work being undertaken according to wikipedia so that could be promising for aspiring future visitors.

It is said to be cursed by the monks that once resided there. In 1684 many young girls were said to have been visited by the devil in their dreams, he sent them to the abbey and they corrupted the monks into satanism. A history of torture and abuse became so notorious that it reached Pope Pio VI in Rome and the abbey was closed.

It is said that in one room of the abbey a pillar gets wet, some believe it is crying due to the horrific experiences of the past. It could just be a leak… just saying.

An evil presence is said to be buried under the crypt, guardians there had to sit around in a circle. The abbots that died were buried in a circle around it and they naturally appeared to have mummified around that way.

Gorton, Connecticut, has a 1909 built lighthouse. It was automated in 1987, it was taken over by the US Coast Guard in 1939 and comes complete with it’s own ghost story. The coat guard crew, before it was automated, reported doors opening, strange sounds and such things as TV’s turning on and bedsheets being removed from the beds without explanation.

In the crew’s log on the last night before it was automated, an unknown author wrote “Rock of slow torture. Ernie’s domain. Hell on earth – may New London’s Ledge light shine on forever because I’m through. I will watch it from afar while drinking a brew.”

Investigations have been conducted by various groups. Ghost Hunters (TAPS) went in and found cold spots and other things linked to paranormal thought they felt there was nothing conclusive.

I am not entirely sure that this would count for my “paranormal” but it’s surely an interesting story, regarding mass death and indeed about the general events. And a slightly creepy aftermath…

 11th November, 2000 saw the disaster in the tunnel of Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 funicular, Austria, claim the lives of 155 people, it left only 12 survivors from the burning train. They were 10 Germans and 2 Austrians, the train was carrying skiers on their way to the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier.

 The train service opened in 1947, and was modernized in 1993. There were two trains that worked simultaneously taking passengers up and down. The train could carry up to 180 passenfers, There were no smoke detectors on board, as it was felt (by Professor Joseph Nejez) that fires could not be an issue on the train. Oh how wrong was he!?

 161 passengers and one conductor boarded the train and the electric fan heater in the unattended cabin at the lower end of the train caught fire. The fire melted the fluid in the brake system, the train then halted unexpectedly 600 meters into the tunnel as a built in safety feature. The passengers had begun to try and get out of the train, 12 people left on the advice of a former firefighter there.

 By the time all this was coming to light, people were already unconscious thanks to the toxic fumes, and the conductor was unable to open any further doors. Those trapped inside were taken out by the smoke, and eventually the fire itself. Two fleeing workers from the Alpine Center mistakenly left their exit doors adding fuel to the situation, of four that tried to escape the center they were only able to save one.

 The furnicular was not opened again, instead it was replaced by a gondola lift and the stations were abandoned. The tunnels have been sealed and remain unused to this day, with the victims of the disaster that they could not fully recover left in a bizarre and macabre grave.
