The “Fakers” damage

Normally I steer clear of directly commenting about someone, especially in this day and age of slander etc but I am going to use an example of a person in the news and use sources that are widely available because I think it should be mentioned given that I post about the paranormal etc… and that is the danger that ‘fake’ mediums bring to the field.

Derek Acorah is not really someone I stomach, I read one of his books and frankly thought it was paper that could have been put too much better use, maybe hamster bedding. Then again I don’t particularly care for the show that made me aware of him, Most Haunted.

This man has claimed to be possessed by spirits, as a medium he has been given money to perform on television and more than once has been found lacking. He started out as a football player and was on the books for Liverpool FC yet never played a game for them and then his career went down another path, being a TV psychic.

By 2004 his fame was rocketing and then in 2005 the hoax personality seems to have been revealed, namely by one of the sceptics on the show. Yes, you can complain it was a sceptic, however it takes someone looking away from the show of the man to look at the evidence I would suspect. How did this happen? Ciarán O’Keefe told the Mirror (newspaper) that he had been secretly feeding him misinformation to see if this was used or not.

Yvette Fielding was given the information, that the name Kreed Kafer had been put on a bit of paper and the name used within earshot of Derek, saying that he was a nasty South African Jailer… The fake name was actually an anagram for “Derek Faker” and low and behold the possession occurred. After this Yvette Fielding made the decision to remove him from the show, however I believe by this point the damage really was apparent. He has not been involved since 2005 and thankfully so.

This man also decided to further muddy his waters when he told the Madeleine McCann family that their child was definitely dead, saying a spirit guide gave him that message and that she would soon be reincarnated. Regardless of what you think about that entire story with the missing young lady, imagine hearing that? Even if you think it’s a pile of steaming horse poo it’s been said… it’s been put out there and now comes the question about do you take comfort/get upset from it or do you punch the guy?

The reason I have picked out Derek Acorah is that I have read his work, and seen him on TV and personally find it hard to work out how people believe him… I find him cringe worthy but again that’s personal opinion. The fact is that this man has more than once been caught out doing things that put mediums into a bad light, and into the faker spotlight.

If you think that medium’s are of benefit and they truly can make contact with the dead then this sort of thing is only going to make the genuine mediums lives even harder work. I have several issues with people that charge for these shows, you can argue they need a living, because I can’t see how in a room of over 200 people or whatever, they can single out a voice from a dead loved one and find that person amongst them. The showboating side of this side of the paranormal frightens me, people come back ready to pay another £20-50 to go back because he tells them a demon is attached to them and they need his help….

If they need help why charge them to come back to another show? Nope… give them the number of a trained exorcist, or give them the number for someone that can legitimately assist. No they charge that person another ticket.. another seat on a bum, someone who’s come back so they can say “oh I believe Sam is here today to …” Oh please. Slap me!

People want to believe, they go because they already do… or maybe a one off to see how far their sceptism goes… either way that sham of a show is then funded. That ego boat has been floated and the damages coming from them have come because people give them the audience. I pray that this isn’t the only side to it we see, I want to believe that if medium’s are a true business the real ones don’t need to be funded by studio lights or “Derek Faker”’s.
