(METPO-2)

Page 69, Fodor’s Moscow & St Petersburg

Moscow’s metro is one of the deepest in the world, but below it, if you believe the Soviet Legend, is a second even deeper metro system, Metro 2. This metro was purportedly built for Stalin as a private line for top party officials. One of the lines supposedly led from the Kremlin to the Lubyanka, the home of the feared KGB.

1933, summer, and two men found a centuries old tunnel within sight of the Kremlin, excited that they might find Ivan the Terrible’s gold-covered books they found 5 skeletons and a rusted door they could not open. They didn’t dare let on what they had found during Stalin’s reign but when Mikhail Gorbechav came to power surviving engineer, Apollos Ivanov, recalled the tale.

It’s a good old-fashioned conspiracy dive, Metro 2 is the informal name for the secret underground system which parallels the public metro system in Moscow. It is theorised that it was built, or at least started, during the era of Joseph Stalin and codenamed D6 (Д-6) by the KGB.

The KGB (Комите́т Госуда́рственной Безопа́сности (КГБ)) was the main security agency for the Soviet Union, 1954-1991 until the breakup of the union. D6 is still rumoured to be operated by the Main Directorate of Special Programmes and Ministry of Defence.

In 1992 a journalist magazine called Yunost published a novel by Vladimir Eonik. It was called Преисподняя  (Preispodniaia or Abyss) and was sent in an Underground bunker in Moscow. The idea of the D6 project had been introduced to them via 20 years of collected papers and works on secret bunkers and an underground railway system that connected them.

Russian reporters have neither confirmed or denied the existence of D6, but there is supposedly evidence of it and when the Rossiya Hotel was demolished near the Kremlin a tunnel was found, providing another potential link into the conspiracy theory being more of a fact. Given that tunnels are all over major cities I’m not actually sure if this is to be counted as proof. So, let’s take a look into what we can find for further information.

1994, an exploration group “Diggers of the Underground Planet” claimed they’d found an entrance to the system, before that in 1991 the United States Department of Defence published a report ‘Military Forces in transition” that had a diagram of the system that was superimposed on a city map which was, it states, designed for 100,000 people.

Igor Maleshenko, the Deputy Director Broadcaster, gave an interview in 1992 with Time and discussed a similar project called Sofrino-2, he said that it has been built in case of a nuclear war but like many of the installations it was unusable. The age, deterioration and flooding had affected a great number of them.

2004, former advisor to Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin, Vladimir Shevchenko confirmed that there was a secret in the Moscow Metro, however he said that the number of these things were greatly exaggerated. He then touched upon the subject again, “currently, the Kremlin subway cannot be called a transportation artery, and, as far as I know, for its continued operation it requires major repairs; for among other things there are a lot of underground utilities which will eventually decay.”

2008 – Mikhail Poltoranin, a minister under Boris Yelstin’s reign, confirmed an extensive network of tunnels for the purpose and mentioned Metro-2 directly.

Dimitry Gayev, ex-chief of the Moscow Metro felt that it would be of little surprise if it existed, in 2008 the head of the Moscow Metro, Svetlana Razina, also discussed that there had been recruiting for a service on secret routes and they required special clearance.

2007 ITAR-TASS stated “line of the Metro-2 has long been in the KGB office.”

Alexander Muzykantskiy was the former Head of Moscow’s Central Administrative District and spoke of a gigantic underground system. They had designed a place to ensure the stable operation of military and political operations during nuclear conflict, and for 91 years was kept as a highest state secret. I also think I will mention England tried to set up the same and I am sure it’s commonplace in many countries and not just Moscow.

Speaking of, the British Secret Intelligence Service also got a little information that was put out via defector. The former colonel of the KGB Oleeg Gordievsky said it was one of the main KGB secrets. The massive complex would likely never be shown to anyone, that huge underground city was not for the common eye.

A 2005 BBC article interviewed Eugine, who was 22 years old and a ‘digger’, they explore the underground spaces of Moscow and he relayed how a Russian reporter wrote about that secret network and was then questioned by the FSB (successor to the KGB). He was careful not to say how they got to their places and had a lot of images that they had collected as a group of diggers.

How has it been used in the media?

Well one of them favourite games uses it, I came across D6 in Metro 2033, a video game based on the series of books by Dimitry Glukhovsky. I’m 100% biased with my love of this nuclear survival and urban-ex nature of the game and in the book, it sends the main character, Artyom, to find the massive ‘bunker-like’ system. The existence is a legend amongst the underground dwellers of the Metro, and they reach one of the entrances located near Kievsaya Station. In the books D6 is only mentioned as Artyom does not go there himself.

Incidentally Metro, 2013, is a film set in the Moscow metro when a major leak sets off a pretty decent disaster movie. It has all the classic hallmarks of the type of film this genre holds and was fairly well received. My Russian understanding is minimal at best, but the plot was fairly simple to follow – spoiler alert below.

Rich man, c husband of wife and their daughter all end up trapped when the area floods. The old and busy tunnels become fatal for various reasons. Character (and a dog) all end up dying, trapped etc and you get some very good footage of the metro as this story goes on. It is clear that when travelling miles of these tunnels and seeing various entrances it would not be hard to believe that there is more than meets the eye, you get a similar feel when you go on the New York subway or the London Underground and so I think it is a subject for interested.

https://silentthrill.wordpress.com/2017/09/04/duga-radio/

If you want my original notes on the matter here they are but I am now going to update a little from the fact that in August (2019) I was lucky enough to get to visit the place directly.

If I get my notes in order properly I believe I will try and do a full write up of the day but I am just updating on the Duga because it was one of the big highlights. The Дугá or Duga-2 (or Chernobyl 2 or Russian Woodpecker) is SO big I cannot simply point out it was large… it is enormous and absolutely wonderful to have seen up close, I don’t know how long it will be standing there because you can see the signs of deterioration all over it but whilst it is there and possible to visit I am glad that people can.

So what else did I learn to add to the original information? Well that the structure likely cost more than putting all four of the reactors online at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant itself.

That the things all over it (pictured below) are known as vibrators, and when the wind did kick up a bit they sort of hummed very slightly. I have pretty good hearing and the sensation of being there and trying to listen was part of the atmosphere.

DugaVibrator.png

Workers would have been able to access the higher parts of the structure by elevator, I don’t think I would want to be on top of that thing on a windy or rainy day. I can’t be sure about health and safety in the former Soviet Union era but I can assure you that I’d be strapping myself to anything I could if I was working up there! I was once subject to a grim report about a death in the North Sea when a rigger failed to do it and my imagination took me straight back to that moment and I shuddered…

DugaElevator.png

There were access ladders originally still on the structure but thanks to irresponsible people climbing up they have been removed. They are on the floor as you can see behind the above photo to stop climbers having any form of easy access. I will say I can imagine people still do try but they clearly don’t think of dropping off the mortal coil if they do as just being near it was enough and I am not even afraid of heights as a general rule.

DugaLadders.png

When the wind gets it the whole thing shudders and shakes, you can hear it move and it’s both wonderful and a little jolting at the same time. The sand around the area might well be covering up the radiation underneath and giving additional support to the thing but if it fell I can’t imagine you would get any time to outrun it… You can see it from so far away even with the forest around it and you can hear it humming due to its size, even without power. I commented on my original post about the fact it would interfere with local radio and now I can understand why, how do you even hide that thing from anyone either?

Well they did have that conversation on the ground in the Ukraine and Moscow when Chernobyl’s nuclear incident happened. It was a secret military installation and they knew that officials coming from outside the Soviet Union may well notice it, did they risk driving people through to the zone and set off the geiger counters and the reality of it OR did they fly them over and pray they didn’t notice? Well in the end officials were flown over, the Chernobyl incident was simply more of a pressing matter than the giant station nearby.

There has been a death at the site in more recent years, in November 2017 (a Facebook post on Geostalkers claim it to have been 27th) a 33 year old man and a father of three died when he fell from the structure. The man was Dmitry Shkinder and he came over to the area from neighbouring country, Belarus. (Belarus is also subjected to having an exclusion zone from the 1986 incident and I shall try to do more on that at some point if I can). It was a cold, wet and windyday and he climbed up 15 foot before falling and meeting his end. “Stalkers” and thrill-seekers are being told to stop going on to the grounds, that stealing scrap metal for recycling is dangerous not to mention the haul may well be radioactive!

“That object has seen no maintenance for three decades. Its rusty, some ladders are loose. On that day it was really wet and cold and there was thick fog,” his friend Roman, who was with Dmitry when he died, told a Belarusian TV station. (Rt.Com)

I absolutely loved this place and visiting. I found it a genuine pleasure to be there and see it for myself and I am glad I was so lucky to get to see it.

I went with SoloEast Travel and they were fantastic. I shall hopefully get to write more about my trip in between my other blogs, and if this interested you I am sure there are plenty of other little dives about my posts you can enjoy.

And my video of what I managed to capture!

So its that time! Time to look at communication, specifically an old over-the-horizon radar system called the Duga from the former Soviet Union (Russia/Ukraine for the purposes of this article.) Over The Horizon (OTH) or Beyond The Horizon (BTH) are radar systems for long range use. Most were used in the 1950’s and 1960’s because they were early warning systems, just think about the Cold War and the idea of it being a necessity; the ones I am looking at here are the Duga system but they were used all over the world and still are, if modern reports online are correct. I am no expert so correct me where you can if I get things wrong.

The system operated from July 1976 up until December 1989, there were two deployed in Chernobyl and Chernihiv. Chernobyl is in the Ukraine and Chernihiv is Siberian. They were powerful and appeared without warning, sounding like a repetitive tapping on 10Hz, they became nicknamed by the listeners as the Russian Woodpecker.

They seemed to pop up pretty randomly and could interrupt legitimate broadcasting and all variations of stations. Complaints were sent in about them but I can’t imagine it being easy to prevent them. Some of the radio and television users began including blockers in the circuit to try and filter out interruption.

The first type of Duga was built in the Ukraine and did successfully detect rocket launchers from 2,500 kilometres. With its success they worked on the larger project. The first signal was picked up in 1976 and amatuer radio users gave it the name woodpecker, some people had reported it as early as 1963. Regardless of the date the Russian Woodpecker was traced back to the Soviet Union. The sources were found in Kiev, Minsk, Chernobyl, Gomel and Chernihiv but eventually narrowed down through speculation has been made that there was more than one transmitter. Wireless World, 1977 muses that along with the OTH system the Russians might be trying to utilise radar returns or another source that worked along side it, or around two or more spots.

I wondered if this was plausible or were we just putting more technical knowledge to that in retrospect or are we accepting that NATO might not have been entirely accurate? The NATO name for DUGA-1 is quoted as STEEL YARD, some sources also use STEELWORK. It is officially recorded name may well be different but not disclosed for security purposes.

Some points of interest are that they realised when listening that it was not used as a form of jamming because Moscow and pro-Soviet Stations were also caught by it, so it couldn’t be reliable enough for that. The signal used three repetition rates of 10Hz, 16Hz and 20Hz, but the most common was 10. They used a fairly wide bandwidth, usually 40Khz.

An attempt to stop the signals causing interruptions came along, one of the ways was tor try and use signals at the same pulsing rate, people formed a club called The Russian Woodpecker Hunting Club. The transmissions slowed down in the 1980’s by 1989 they had disappeared. This slow down and eventual end does coincide with the Cold War closing down, the official end being 8th December 1971 when the Soviet Union ceased to exist. Another factor in the close would be a further advancement in early warning systems, satellite systems are far more advanced and less likely to be affected by adverse weather.

The original Duga system was experimental and it lies outside of the Black Sea port of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine. It was restored in 2002 after it was badly damaged by fire. As of October 2013 there is a possibility to visit the Ukrainian site via tour operators for Chernobyl who know how to get the correct paperwork.

For those who like modern reference here are some ways the Duga has been imported into modern media.

If, like me, you enjoy games like Metro Last Light or S.T.A.L.K.E.R then you may already know this… Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is a heavy feature in S.T.A.L.K.E.R and specifically around the nuclear accident. The Duga array is in Clear Sky after the main campaign game. It is in the fictional city of Limansk-13 you can see it and visit it in game. The ‘Brain Scorcher’, a military installation, is inspired by the idea that Duga-1 was used for mind-control.

Call of Duty:Black Ops the map ‘Grid’ is placed in Pripyat and the array can be seen in game there too.

A documentary by Chad Garcia looks into the Chernobyl disaster and the potential links to the structure. The documentary interviews people directly involved in the building and operation of the installation.

So I rarely try to pick current things that are still likely to come out of the woodwork with more but I’ve decided that since I have read a fair bit about it,why not? Where applicable I have linked in as much as I can.

So many of us gamers like a weird addition to our day, the old creepy ones that are indie-made can become very popular. Take Slender Manor Kraven Manor as a couple of examples of this. Games that you can play free and add to your youtube channel etc. So when Sad Satan came up naturally it was going to be played if people could get hold of it…

There’s just one snag, footage of it appears to be rare to find and in fact the first set appeared to be by a youtuber ‘Obscure Horror Corner‘. I am subscribed and he seems happy to play lots of these types but Sad Satan came up and people asked why and where it was coming from.

The basic claim is this, via the Tor/unlisted Surface web down where the bad stuff goes came this game. The game has many references to what we would consider the terrible side of humanity, such as references to Charles Manson, graphic real life horror stock and weird sound-bites (there’s also rumour of child pornography and I am NOT going to look into any of it for this reason).

OHC claimed that he was playing the game and filmed some of it, he then deleted the games and links. The link he said is now a dead one. This story was picked up by the website Kotaku where it gave the information from Jamie (OHC) but later on the supposedly given link was questioned about it’s validity. The reason for this (I am no guru here just summarising) is that the game link had a letter 9 in the link thread, but the way they work for .onion links there is that the digit 9 makes it a false or invalid link.

Not long after the website 4Chan had a user that claimed they had provided the original link to OHC and they gave a link, naturally people of the curious nature went a little click happy downloading it. They found that the files contained some graphic pictures and the aforementioned CP (I feel a little queasy writing that let alone anything else). So there come more stories about it affecting computers to the point of needing to rebuild their windows etc. or strange files occurring.

In response to the link going up OHC responded via Otaku that he had provided the broken link to avoid people downloading the files, that clearly contained content that was not legal or was in fact dangerous to the PC. The scepticism remains given this information and others, they wonder if he hadn’t just done this to prolong his hoax. So far there seems to be a cleaned up version that was made by reddit use /u/blindstark that has been made available for download and removed all the graphic images. To download the cleaned up version a user needs the terror engine and link.

Here is the information if you really want to get a copy

So in fact it seems that the general consensus is that someone created the game, when it was challenged he released a far worse version upon the unsuspecting crowd.

Why is this of interest? Well let’s be honest, if you are reading this you are probably already a curious individual and aware of how these things can end up as their own meme. Look at Slenderman as a comparison for how a story can become something engrained in fact, the lore was birthed and watched on the internet by an avid crowd. This appears to be similar though it’s entire motivation has yet to be (or may never be) resolved.

Audio:

Within the gameplay there are various components, suggesting to me that the creator rather likes the curious as well as the gross. In the first of OHC’s video’s the Numbers Station creation is used, the Swedish Rhapsody. Then part of it is from a song by Lynch Mob, KMFDM which was supposedly the favourite station of the Columbine Shooters. The last one on the first clip is a man talking in Russian which has been reversed and again is a Numbers Station ‘RussianMan‘. I can’t help but think the numbers station thing is more because there’s no one likely to claim copyright on them and they can make an eerie effect for noise. And finally his first clip ends with the use of a Led Zeppelin song, Stairway to Heaven.

On the second part most of the audio seems to be a speech by Hitler that has been slowed down, alongside further use of Stairway to Heaven. The third part uses the phrase “If I started murdering people, there’d be none of ya left” which is part of an MSNBC interview with the notorious Charles Manson. There is also further use of this interview. The other audio source appears to be use of a Chinese song, I love Benjamin Tienanmen, possibly due to being a loose reference to the controversy of Tienanmen Massacre.

So part four audio, not a great deal more in here again but there is a reversed speech from Johnny Rotten, The Sex Pistols, this links into the idea that he was aware of the Jimmy Saville scandal way back in the day. After that is more audio that sounds like an English man in an interview, having listened to it, it sounds like someone saying “Do you think you can just wake me up?” probably Rotten himself, it sounds similar enough. The other part of the audio is that there is someone sobbing/crying and then again it plays more Stairway to Heaven.

The fifth and final part (so far or possibly the end) uses a slowed down audio of Simon and Garfunkel’s song Scarborough Fair, the next one that is used appears to be a reversed and slowed down version of the Doors song, Alabama Song. Finally another and the last bit identified is that of Jimmy Saville, now more famous for being announced as using his status as a celebrity to engage in under-age sexual acts, amongst other allegations. The extract is an interview, it is here he points out a quote “Haven’t broken any laws have you? None whatsoever “ which given the events is pretty creepy.

Imagery

In the first part there is an image regularly used, of a photograph by Walter Sanders taken of Franz Joseph, 9th Prince of Thurn and Taxis. Other than being a little creepy thanks to the antlers there’s really nothing more to it. Most of the video other than that is exploration.

In the second part we see an image of JFK before he was shot, there is however reference to the president in regards to loose conspiracy theorists/claims etc. of paedophilia. (Again merely a speculation I have seen come up about the CIA covering this up). An image by photographer Roger Ballen, “Shadow Chamber” is used showing a picture of a child that has their head in their clothes giving a strange impression they are headless. The collection itself is really very interesting – Roger Ballen.

Jimmy Saville with Margaret Thatcher is seen in another image used, Saville was an English DJ and was also in a show called ‘Jim’ll Fix It’ where he arranged for children’s dreams to come true. Sadly it was seen that he was not always the thing of dreams, facts came to light afterwards that were nightmare fuel. Over 450 people had made complaints about his conduct and Thatcher had tried to get him knighted whilst she was Prime Minister, alongside the idea that she was directly involved in the cover ups. So again the image links into the idea of child abuse. (again if you want more Reddit user Hyper_Reality used sources in their discussions).

In the video the words In Nomine Dei Satanas Luciferi Excelsi show up, this is effectively translated as a In the name of our god Satan, Lucifer on high. Effectively this has been cited as part of a Black Mass ritual. This seems to be more an extract simply lifted because it either sounded cool or they wanted to throw in a bit more of the underground culture vibe. In all honesty the Sad Satan idea seems to be a reason to vaguely link it and nothing more.

The third video provides more, so there are some bits of coded text that were translated into “I can track you”, “U are on my list” and “5 victim” (citation was reddit user Cyberham) and seems to be a suggestion to some that the game has been made with a coded ability to follow and track a user that downloads it, and also that the number 5 is to do with the Satanists of Ash Tree Close. In regards to this it is sometimes also mentioned that Jimmy Page (Stairway to Heaven etc) was was somehow involved.

Are you still reading? I know there’s a lot here isn’t there? So part four then gives an image of Rolf Harris, another man who was brought to the forefront about child molestation charges. For anyone that is in my age generation we grew up with both Saville and Rolf Harris on TV, to see the news was quite an intrigue. I always did find Saville a bit creepy… anyway moving on! He is in the image there and again that’s a strong theme throughout the videos currently available.

In another frame we see Lady Justice, perhaps this is the image that is supposed to be there to point out the abhorrent themes and nature of those things in the game. The idea that this one flashing image offsets the rest, if I am honest, is pretty pathetic but the flash frame does provide at least some incite to the idea that the themes are morally and legally outrageous.

Part Five – it seems very strange that in the fifth one we get an image of Andres Escobar who was famous because he was shot and killed after shooting an own goal back in a football (Soccer) match in the USA. After his death his family started to teach disadvantaged children to play soccer under his name, I don’t know if this is supposed to link to the idea of there being good people for children or the creator is trying to put a sinister light on it.

Further into the last part that got uploaded, there was a picture of Roman Polanski who was arrested for the rape of 13 year old Samantha Geimer, in 1977.

One last image that was involved is that of druids, now this I think might be linked to some of the suggestions that the druids may well have been involved in cannibalism and child sacrifice. Since the links involved mostly seem to include anything to do with child scandals this is where I presume the link comes in.

Recent evidence that Druids possibly committed cannibalism and ritual human sacrifice—perhaps on a massive scale—add weight to ancient Roman accounts of Druidic savagery, archaeologists say. Article this was in is Druids Committed Human Sacrifice, Cannibalism? James Owen, National Geographic News. Related TV show Secrets of the Druids, 2009.

Summary so far?

Honestly this is probably a lovely hoax written by someone with an eye for a little artistry, and who has spent a little time getting to grips with the Terror Engine. It’s a creepy little thing made more intriguing because the OHC poster claims it came from a site not found on the surface web.

Now to make things a little easier to understand on that level = this doesn’t mean it’s going to be a criminal activity it is more that pop culture and popular opinion sees it that way, thanks to news releases about things like Silk Road being closed down over drugs. Quite often the reason these things are so darkly alluring is because we truly do not understand it, much like medicine in the dark ages, so it frightens us. We assume a great deal of things, ALL of it must be bad, because SOME of it is listed as bad. Not the case… there’s a lovely site there about over 2000 cat facts. Yes it’s open to abuse, clearly, but there’s also a reason it might not be listed that is more mundane, it was never listed to be found there.

Of course now that someone has either created it via a replication of the video’s seen and it has gained interest the abuse factor raises. Downloading the links you see on forums can do one of two things… give you a game that has some files in with with disgusting pictures for the sake of it, OR probably filled with malware and other things to attack your PC. So in summary you can download it at your own risk, but the link I gave above appears to be the safest one so far.

So what facts do we actually have?

  1. OHC has five videos claiming to have found the game, he hasn’t got the original downloaded and yet released videos after the claim he had, either he was editing them or it’s false. Given that there seems to be no editing in the games this might raise suspicion.

  2. The links now found are pretty much the one above from a reddit user that cleaned up the files he downloaded for folks and the other one with CP images and gore.

  3. The overall theme is definitely about children, you could say they might be a victim of this theme or perhaps more disturbingly just find this a great fuel to get people interested, and you know what it has? I mean here I am writing it up as an example.

  4. The Deep Web/Invisible Web blah blah makes it more of a talking point, if it was just uploaded it would likely have even garnered a fraction of this interest.

  5. It actually looks boring… sorry I have to be the one to say this. All my interest was going on about how it might end up being shocking but other than images and loud noises the overall theme is pretty poor, the game has zero direction in the extracts provided so what exactly happens at the end? It seems like someone created an exploration game and threw in as much dodgy dark-subculture as they could to get a rise.

  6. If you are the creator and went to all these lengths to troll and get attention, I say hats off sir/madam. Achievement unlocked.

Got any comments or views on the matter? I’d really love to hear them and if you have got the end then sure send me information. Want to keep yourself anon from posters? Send me an e-mail silentthrillblog@gmail.com

In 2005 the ever popular World or Warcraft MMO introduced a new raid to the game, it was Zul’Gurub (now a dungeon instance) that has been cited as a model for real world epidemic study. The games mechanics introduced a damaging effect called ‘Corrupted Blood’ from the last ‘boss’, Hakkar, that came off the players when they either died or the boss was killed. It could however be on the pets that players brought along and when they left the instance it continued to stay on the pets.

Consequently some players inadvertently spread this to others as it leapt from the pets to the players, this incident primarily occurred in Ironforge, the Dwarven City. Some players indeed found this quite amusing and deliberately brought it to the city as well.

Discussion forums at the time discussed the sight of bodies in the streets of the city, and it seems that at least three of the multiple servers were affected. The towns and major cities were abandoned by those not affected as they went into the countryside. The urban areas were then graveyards with the white bones of the dead.

It was interesting to see that players that had an ability to help did so, they directed the lower level characters away from the area and where they could remove the disease from others they did but other players deliberately brought the contagion to others.

Blizzard then attempted quarantine, the idea being that those affected would stay in a contained area but vindictive players (or those not taking it seriously as it was a game) brought that to those areas, praying on the weak and the fact it was a confined area. Some players ensured that the pets that caught it were then ‘un-summoned’ to remove the issue but ultimately Blizzard had to hard reset all the servers and reprogram the glitch.

After the outbreak the next even in 2008 was intentional. Blizzard released a zombie plague week in order to promote the new release of the expansion ‘Wrath of the Lich King’. This one was seemed more true-to-life as it was a small risk of transmission and encountering a lone zombie was not as dangerous as a large number of the infected. It was met with both praise and criticism, and from my side, mostly praise as it was an interesting adaptation to the game for a short period of time.

The epidemic of the Corrupted Blood was compared to real life breakouts, the CDC did ask for information about the statistics but Blizzard found they could not provide them as it was a computer glitch. It was also fascinating to see that it was carried from a remote area into a larger one, that people and animals could contract it, much like Avian Flu, and that people in larger areas were more at risk.

However there were differences from the real world too that negate parts of the study, such as it did not affect the non-playable characters because they did not transmit it. Alongside this there were no visible signs of the disease, such as pustules or other effects, but there was one thing that made it feel realistic – the rush of journalists wanting to cover the story and then get back out of it.

There was a discussion about using the platform for further study with the players however it never really came to fruition. It was felt that it was not really going to be indicative of a real world situation. There was not enough realistic data because players regenerate and with that meant there was little threat on the infection if all the player precautions could be set up, it would really be more for entertainment…

It was also discussed that WOW could be used in terms of how terrorists form collaborations and cells, this again would only be used for entertainment as a model could not be formed from the game. It did however give interesting light when someone pointed out that people quickly got smart in the game about how to do the biggest damage to the most amount of people and how. And lets not forget that it is a game and the very worst that can happen, unlike real life, is you can re-spawn and get back to doing what you like, so it really does not mirror real life.
