Semarang, Central Jave, Indonesia has a colonial era building as a famous landmark. The local city government has attempted to re-brand it, as it’s more well-known locally as a haunted house.

The name translates to ‘Thousand Doors’ and this name comes from its large design, the numerous arts and doors, not to mention around 600 large windows.

It’s construction started in 1904, and was finished in 1907; by 2009 it had fallen into a state of disrepair. Inside its walls were cracked and the wallpaper was left hanging off, mould and weeds were taking over and only the exterior has been kept up to any measure.

In 2014 the Semarang City Government stated they planned to use the building for a food court, and maybe a gym in an attempt to stop the rumours, and yet still attracts around 1,000 people a day.

One of the ghosts is said to be a Dutchwoman who committed suicide inside the building. There is also said to be headless ghouls that wander it’s corridors too.

In 2007 the building was used for a horror film ‘Lewang Sewu: Dendam Kuntilanak’ based on the legends. The plot sees high school students trapped inside after several of them need to urinate, in the film there is a Dutchwoman, and a man with a ball and chain around his leg. If that isn’t enough to sate your budget horror palate there’s a Kuntilanak (vampire ghost). The film got a poor reception and scathing reviews, you’ve been warned. It could be horrific but an entirely different set of reasons!

An unoccupied territory with 4-20 non-residents who are from the US Government, The Nature Conservancy and then another mix of rotating researchers are the only people that generally access this part of the world.

In 9174, Palymyra was the site of a double murder, of a wealthy San Diego couple. ‘Mac and Muff’ aka Malcolm Graham and his wife Eleanor were the victims. Duane Walker and his girlfriend, Stephanie Stearns, were blamed for it and arrested when they came to Honolulu that year. They were in the Graham’s boat the Sea Wind.

No bodies were located at the time and so they were unable to trial them for murder, they were both convicted for the theft of the yacht however. Then six years later a partially buried, corroded chest with the remains of Eleanor were discovered.

Duane Walker and Stephanie Stearns were arrested again, this time Duane was convicted and served from 1985-2007 for the crime. He died 26th April 2010 and Stearns was acquitted.

It is a Fast Radio Burst (FRB), it is a transient celestial radio pulse lasting only milliseconds, and thought to be of extra-galactic origin. Yeah you heard me!

There seems to be no real solid theory or explanation, a suggestion is that there could be a connection to gamma ray bursts. They changed rapidly in brightness and so it’s believed that the source must be very small.

It was spotted in 2007, it’s not alone either as four more have been identified since that point. They are very short bursts coming from anything from 5 to 11 billion light years away, so back in time their sounds now come to us to be heard.

We are effectively hearing explosions of the past which sounds pretty awesome to me! Are we hearing events from ancient alien civilisations? Echo’s of events mirroring things like the Big Bang? I’ll leave it up to you to decide.

Okay here goes! This one is pretty famous to those of us that like to watch horror at the very least. As the setting for the Session 9 Film (the cast of CSI in a horror?) it has a very interesting history let alone the ghost stories… so hold on to your coffee/tea and get ready for a blog that could be rather lengthy. The State Lunatic Hospital was a psychiatric hospital located in Danvers, Massachusetts. Built in 1874 and opened in 1878 it was a self-contained hospital built according to the Kirkbride Plan. One of the rumours boasts it as a birthplace of pre-frontal lobotomy (lush!).

It was originally two main centre buildings which had the administration and had four radiating wings. There were kitchens, laundry, a chapel, dormitories, boiler  house and other detailed rooms from the plans and records that exist. The water came from Middleton Pond. Over the years they added other buildings and most of the buildings on the campus were connected by a series of confusing underground tunnels. Part of this underground myriad of tunnels was a hub for maintenance; this was nicknamed “The Wagon Wheel”. The older tunnels were used in the Session 9 film. With the original plan being to house 500 patients it’s no surprise that with over 2000 by the late 40’s overcrowding was a major issue. People were held in the basements of the Kirkbride and of course this will add to the stories of  ghosts, tales of horror and anguish.

The asylum was established for residential treatment and care for the mentally ill, in the 1890’s Dr Charles Page, superintendent, declared the use of mechanical  restraint as unnecessary and harmful in some cases. There was more then one account of the way in which people that been treat, the idea of inhumane shock therapies, lobotomies, drugs to control the patients and the time honoured tradition of the straight-jackets. June 24th 1992 the hospital closed, the buildings were left to rot and it was not until many years later it was demolished.

The property was sold to Avalon Bay Development in December 2005 and they demolished most of the buildings, despite an outcry about the matter. June 2006  spelt  the last of the demolition, including the Kirkbride, only the Danvers Reservoir and original block shell remain, buildings are worked around it, Avalon Bay predicted they would have properties ready by Fall 2007.

A spanner in the works came up April 7th, 2007 when four of the complex buildings and four of their construction trailers burnt down. The fire was visible 17 miles away in Boston and investigation began. Avalon Bay provided a live webcam of the construction at the old hospital site however they cut out around 2:03am; it could be due to the damage from the fire. The underground tunnel to the power plant still exists though it is blocked off, and now the only thing left of the asylum are the cemeteries, blocked off tunnels and the brick shell of the Admin, D and G Wings.

So what of the ghosts? Now converted into apartments there have been reports of flickering lights, of full body apparitions, footsteps and audible sounds, and the doors that like to open and close seemingly of their own accord. Here goes:

2001 horror Session 9 is filmed around here, I thought it was a pretty good film.

In Project 17 by Laurie Faria Stolarz teenagers break in to investigate the haunted asylum.

In Mage: The Awakening (Role play game) the hospital in the World of Darkness was administered by vampires who fed on the patients.

It is also believed to be a widely used source of inspiration for H P Lovecraft’s Arkham Sanatorium, alongside the Asylum that shares the name in Batman. It is referenced by name in H P Lovecraft’s Pickman’s Model.

Stockstill: We did something to the altitude.
Loft: What?
Stockstill: We’re still at 2,000 feet, right?
Loft: Hey — what’s happening here?

Eastern Air Lines, Flight 401 is famous due to the tragic accident that occurred, 29th December 1972. The crew did not see the deactivation of the autopilot during a troubleshoot with a malfunction on the landing gear indicator system, as a result 101 people lost their lives. 77 survived but of those 2 died shortly afterwards. It was the first crash of a wide-bodied aircraft and the deadliest in the USA, as it crashed into the Florida Everglades.

Bob Loft had been with the airline for over 30 years, the flight carried 163 passengers and 13 crew. Upon reaching Miami International Airport and all looked fine until first officer Stockstill noticed the green light for the landing gear was not showing and as it was possible the gear was not all the way down so they tried again to try but aborted it when no light arrived.  They flew out around the Everglades to try and resolve the problem, so the autopilot was put on and for 80 seconds they carried on with a level flight.

When it was noticed that they had already descended below, the initial message above is the one recovered from the flight recorder later on. The plane was travelling at 227 miles an hour when it hit the ground and broke up as it slid along the swamp ground.

A hero of the crash is Rob Marquis (Bud) who was in the swamp when the plane hit. He rushed to the scene and assisted with the rescue. His efforts gave him the Humanitarian Award and the Alumitec Airboat Hero Award. In 2007 he was awarded a plaque, but sadly the injuries that he had suffered also contributed to his death in 2008 (Rest in peace hero).

The swamp that they landed in helped to save the lives of some crash survivors as it lessened the impact on the plane, and blocked up some wounds.  Eight passengers were however infected with gas gangrene and hyperbaric chambers had to be found for them to ensure they could recover.

Of the survivors 60 received serious injuries, 17 had minor injuries and did not have to be hospitalised. The most common injuries included fractures and 14 of the survivors had varied degrees of burns.

I am going to leave the crash causes etc and move on to the reason I picked this for a post. Ghosts…

The plane had some salvageable parts and Flight 401’s parts were re-used amongst Eastern’s planes.  Reports had been made on planes amongst the fleet about sightings of the crew and passengers of the flight being aboard. Sightings of Don Repo and Bob Loft were so becoming a worrying problem, the company warned staff of dismissal if they were caught spreading the ghost stories.

It is worth noting that the sightings were only on planes with the salvaged parts too. Whilst the rumours were washed away by the company it is reported that all the parts were then removed and replaced. An original floorboard remains in the archives at History Miami in South Florida. Reports have since petered out.

the crash and a mention of the ghost story is mentioned in Series 5, Episode 9 of Air Crash Investigations.
