It is a cemetery in the Gorbal’s district, Glasgow, Scotland and was opened in 1840 to provide more affordable burials; there are over 250,000 burials there on various layers of the place. The Old Gorbals cemetery was vastly overcrowded, this is not unusual for the time period, London and many major cities around the UK were opening more graveyards to compensate for the lack of space in those already established.

The proposals for a new cemetery started in 1839 and the following year the land was purchased and the first burial commenced. The first soul laid to rest there was 16-month old and occurred 21st July 1840. The three sections opened as follows: Central in 1840, Eastern in 1846 and Western in 1850. In 1954 the cemetery suffered from a large group of children who were committed to hunting down a vampire that they believed was buried in the cemetery. The incident sparked it’s own urban legend, a vampire had killed two children. The influence for this was blamed on American horror comics like Tales from the Crypt, despite no evidence for the reason being the comics the moral outrage led to an increased comic censorship.

23rd September 1954 PC Alex Deeprose was called out and expected to deal with a case of vandalism, instead he was met with hundreds of children from around 4 years old up to 14. They were armed with sticks and knives and were patrolling around inside the cemetery. They told the constable that they were looking for a 7 foot tall vampire, with iron teeth and had that he had kidnapped and eaten two local boys.

The rumours started in the playground, and there was a Chinese whisper emerging that they were going to head out there after school. At three o’clock that day the school emptied and children headed to the graveyard, gathering around the walls. Some were too scared to go in and stayed outside. There were no records of missing children at the time and the only blame they could come up with – comics.

Newspapers at the time took the tale and ran with it, the children turned up a second evening running and the headmaster of a local school had told them it was a ridiculous tale and eventually had the crowd dispersed.

Some of the other people in the area pointed out that they had got little reason to blame comics, after all the children were taught the bible. Daniel 7.7 specifically mentions a monster with iron teeth in it. The political frenzy however meant blaming comics was far more convenient. A local man explained that they would threaten the local children with the Iron Man before then, it was meant to be a sort of bogeyman affair but the political agenda against the comics made a better fit for the reason.

The cemetery is now operated by Glasgow City Council and is protected as a listed Category B building with the entrance listed as Category A. The cemetery also has 11 Commonwealth burials.

Conspiracy theorists no doubt love this one, the JFK assassinations. Here’s a brief lowdown for you, with some of the notes I’ve found floating around the internet.

John F Kennedy, US president, died 1.00pm on November 22nd, 1963 in Parkland Hospital, Dallas having been shot half an hour earlier in his car, he was waving to spectators as they passed the Texas School Depository. The first shot missed him, the second pass through his neck and hit Texas Governor, John Connally, and the third shot proved to be the fatal one. The Vice President, Lyndon Johnson was sworn in immediately.

1.15pm Tippit, a Dallas policeman was shot dead, the killer ran into a cinema and was arrested. Lee Harvey Oswald was the man, he was identified as having left behind a rifle at the Book Depository Building. He was charged with double murder and whilst being moved to the county jail, Jack Ruby, pushed through reporters and shot him dead. There was to be no trial for the murderer of the president.

So the conspiracy theorists? They wonder if he could have made all three shots in 8 seconds, or if there was another shooter on the grassy gnoll? After all it seems that Jack Ruby had been able to to get through to walk up and shoot Oswald.

It was originally part of the M67 Penine Motorway, but was aborted and the road was downgraded to a dual carriageway until its present day state as a single carriageway with crawler lanes. It’s located in Stocksbridge near Sheffield.

The road gained notoriety due to a series of deaths either from poor driving, speeding or the prior design of the road. It was investigated by some TV personalities including Michael Aspel, due to a variety of reports about the hauntings down the roads.

One of the stories about the area involves a group of security guards who saw children playing near Pearoyd Bridge. They were curious because the clothes they were wearing seemed outdated, when they went over to take a look they did not find any footsteps or in the mud or signs of where they had been playing. The next day they found out from workmen in the local caravans they had heard them at night too.

Another night two drivers observed a figure on the bridge who looked a monk. They drove towards the monk who vanished, the two men there contacted the local police who didn’t really believe the story, they in turn went to the local vicar who confirmed the story with the police too.

Because of this they dispatched a couple of officers to look around, having found something around there which was blowing in the wind (they found it to be tarpaulin) and turned to go back to the car. They saw a torso in the window that vanished, then couldn’t get the car to start at the beginning but when they eventually did they pulled over to check in a little further up the road. Having pulled over they heard a crash and felt it in the car, there was no one around so they in turn high-tailed it back.

So any reality behind it? Who knows but legend has it that a disillusioned monk left Hunshelf Priory and went to work at Underbank Hall. I am not sure how this translates into a haunting as there is no mention of a violent death or some such other trouble that might lead to the monk haunting the area. Let me know…

Another article I found about it

“Long Liz” or Elizabeth Stride was born Elisabeth Gustafsdotter in Sweden. She died 30th September 188, and was the third victim in the Ripper canon five. That afternoon she was cleaning rooms in the lodging house, 32 Flower and Dean Street, where she had been on and off for the last six years. The deputy cleaner, Elizabeth Tanner, gave her six pence for the chores.

6.30pm she was drinking in the nearby Queen’s Head pub, she came back to the lodge house at 7pm and borrowed a clothes brush as she was ready to out. She chatted with a lodger and then headed out about half an hour later.

It rained that night, (trust me that’s no surprise in England) and she was then seen 11pm when she sheltered in the doorway of the Bricklayer’s Arms. She was with a man about 5’5 and he wore a black mourning suit with a billycock hat. The man was hiding and kissing her, as he was a respectable looking man the witnesses, two men, saw it as a little odd and shouted out a bit of banter their way. They told the woman to watch out as Leather Apron would be after them, this was the known name for the Ripper at that time. Apparently a little embarrassed they hurried off after that.

11.45 a man and woman were spotted kissing by a labourer, he made a remark and they again headed off. The height matched the previous chap but he said this man looked like a clerk of some kind with a round cap on, a small sailor-like peak. By 12.30pm that night PC William Smith was to come across them both as well at Dutfield’s Yard. He said the man he saw did not match either of those from the prior talks either. This time the man was 5’7, wore a dark overcoat and deerstalker hat. He also identified her but added she had been wearing a flower pinned to her jacket.

There was a period that cannot be traced for her actions but 30 minutes before the body was found a Hungarian Jew, Israel Schwarz, turned into the yard around 12.45am and stopped to talk to a woman standing in the Dutfield’s Yard gateway, he was very certain that it was Stride herself.

He spoke no English and he used an interpreter, he may well have been witness to the start of the events but the police didn’t scrutinise him too well. Another part I feel worth noting is that there were differences in the details given between interviews to police and journalists but more so I think it is worth noting he was around 5’5 and had dark hair, broad shoulders and was possibly slightly drunk.

He felt that he was witness to a domestic attack, a man pulled her into the street, spun her around and then threw her onto the pathway where she tried to scream three times, but says it was not loudly. He says he crossed the road to avoid ending up involved. He said he saw a second man nearby who called out Lipski to the man and then the second man followed Schwartz. By this time Schwartz panicked and ran. He says the second man was around 5’11 and looked quite fresh and clean, this has led to yet more speculation an accomplice was involved.

Yet another conflict arises with the details of the man not being identified officially, but according to Chief Inspector Swanson he was not a suspect. It is now know that another woman was killed around the same time, 12.45 – 1am Elizabeth Stride and the fourth victim, ‘Kate’ Eddowes (more on her another post in).

1am Louise Diemshutz, had come back from hawking cheap jewellery and turned the pony and cart into the yard. The pony would not more in and so he headed towards the bundle causing the issue. Striking a match for a better view he spotted a woman lying on the ground and thinking it was his wide he headed into the club, when he found his wife safe he said to the club members he could not tell if she was drunk or dead. Off they went to investigate.

Several men were witness to the horror, a woman lay with her throat cut. They arranged to get a policeman and Diemshutz with a companion shouted out Murder and Police to be heard along Fairclough Street. They met Edward Spooner who came with them and looked at her, tilting her head they saw how bad it was. The blood ran from the body to the door of the club and in the woman’s hand was a piece of paper with breath freshner in it. PC Henry Lamb was the officer brought over and the crowd was now around 20/30 strong.

Lamb got them to back off and said to get the Dr. In contrast to the other victims so farhe had also said that she seemed to have been laid down quietly and her clothes did not look disturbed. Dr Blackwell said he estimated she had been dead between 20 and thirty minutes. He could not tell if the scarf she had on was there before or after, had she been standing up the scarf could have already been on. He had cut through her windpipe and she had bled out, no residents had seem to have heard anything nearby and having interrogated the locals present found no further leads.

They tried a hiding place in a loft but found it empty, then they arranged the body to be moved and by 5am the blood was being washed from the yard.

From my perspective whilst she seems to have died on the same night, I actually find her the more dubious of the canon five as a victim. Here are my reasons (please note only MY opinion) is that the skirts were not moved and throat slitting is still, and was, a pretty simple method of removing a life. She also seems to be very closely timed to another Ripper Victim and with so much movement in a short space it is worth considering that this would not have been an easy movement to make.

The lack of lower mutilation and the fact the witness seemingly saw a lead up argument that might well be the murder with her, I have to wonder if she wasn’t merely a victim of a murder who’s escalation in fame is due to the others of the time. Again… this is my opinion, she is counted as Canon and I am just playing armchair detective with those ideas!

Usually I leave current news to countless blog sites out there but this one is just too strange to pass up!

A man in Miami, Rudy Eugene, 31 years old was shot dead by the Miami police when they found the strange scene of a man attacking another man and eating his face. I am not kidding you either, this is real news…

So… why so weird? Drugs are being blamed at the forefront of the news, the attack has left his victim in a critical condition. Not deterred by one shot at him the crazed man continued until he was killed by multiple rounds.  Before I get into the details too much I just wanted to add, wtf to the people who passed this by and did nothing!! Nothing at all, one person on a bicycle is seen continuing on in the video.

So the victim appears to have been named as Ronald Poppo, a 65 year-old man. He remains critical with a substantial amount of damage to his face, the details I can get suggest anything from over two thirds to 75/80% of his face having been chewed upon by the assailant.

There is a theory this is something drug related, that it has come from smoking Bathsalts or possibly LSD hallucinations. Either way the man was naked, possibly trying to cool down from the drugs, and the first shot did not affect him enough to stop. Let’s wait to see what Toxicology makes of it eh?

The police are involved some time later when a passer-by finally reports the strange event.  I don’t believe for one moment “possible zombie outbreak” is going to have been covered in the handbook!
