Stripper. Go on let out the groan, it feels better.

JTS is the nickname attacked to an unidentified serial killer from 1964 to 1965. I am going to detail the victims of the serial killer that are confirmed:

  • 2nd February 1964, Hannah Tailford was found dead near Hammersmith Bridge, the 20 year old was strangled, several teeth were missing and her underwear had been forced down her throat.

  • 8th April 1964 saw Irene Lockwood found dead on the shore of the Thames; a 57 year old man named Kenneth Archibald confessed three weeks alter but it was inconsistent and a third victim came to light. She was 26 years old.

  • 24th April 1964, Helen Bathelemy was found dead in an alleyway. The 22 year old case yielded the first evidence, paint flecks used for car manufacturing, it was felt it likely came from the killers workplace.

  • 14th July 1964, Mary Flemming’s body was found in an open street, close to heavy police presence and again paint spots were found on the 30 year old’s body.

  • On the 23rd October 1964 Frances Brown was last seen alive by a fellow prostitute, Kim Taylor, who saw the 21 year old picked up by a man who is now believed to have been her killer. She was found a month later, 25th November.

  • Bridget O’Hara’s date of death could not be confirmed as her body had been stored in a warm heated area, she was found in a storage shed. Once again the body had flicks of paint on them.

Possible victims also include a 21 year old Elizabeth Figg, she was found five years before the Stripper murders started, 17th June 1959. She was in the area and had also been strangled. The other was Gwynneth Rees who was found dead in a rubbish tip near the Thames, she was 22 years old and again had been strangled, she also had several teeth missing. She was discovered 8th November 1963.

7,000 suspects were interviewed and at an initial conference Chief Superintendent John Du Rose falsely stated that they had narrowed it down to 20 people. After a short period it was claimed to be 10 and finally three, but what is known is that after this no more Stripper murders occurred.

There have been theories put forwards about who the murderer was, one of them was that it might be a man named Mungo Ireland. He was picked up as a suspect for O’Hara’s murder and worked as a security guard near Heron Trading Estate. The estate was linked to the paint and shortly after the link Ireland committed suicide, but research suggests that he was in Scotland at the time that she was most likely murdered.

Howard Jones, convicted murdered from Wales, was also put forward as a suspect as he killed two girls in 1921, he did not get the death penalty because of his age and was released in 1941 where they think he went back to his home town, of Arbetillery. In 1942 he was in London and had come to marry and have a daughter. He was not considered for it at the time but it seems that much of the speculation about him comes merely from coincidence and not fact.

What do you think?

AKA the Buzzer, is a broadcast station on shortwave radio at the frequency 4625kHz. It is a monotonous tone, it happens at a rate of 25 tones per minute and continues 24 hours a day. There have been rare incidents where voice communications have occurred in Russian and it has been active from around the 1970-80’s. So far no set reason for the station has been given, they have been able to confirm that the origins of the station can be traced back to Russia but there is little more to go by than that. The station originally identified itself as UVB-76 until September 2010, but it then moved location and is now broadcasting as MD2hB.

It seems that when the voices come through they are live and maybe due to an accidental microphone being transmitted.  For instance is seems that there was a change 2011, 9th April there are an interruption and technicians were heard making repairs. October that year a second buzzing was heard that interfered with the original transmission.  going back a little is seems that in November 2001 there was a conversation, “Я – 143. Не получаю генератор.” “Идёт такая работа от аппаратной.”   ” I am 143. Not receiving the generator (oscillator).”  and “That stuff comes from the hardware room.”

Overall it’s considered to be either military or research based. Perhaps there is also the explanation that they are being used to ensure that other receiving stations are alert. There was one other strange occurrence too, when the buzzer for a 38 second break for the Dance of the Little Swans, a part of the Swan Lake ballet by Tchaikovsky, then four days after on the 5th September there was an interruption as a female voice counted from one to nine, one hour later it was silenced for a male to read a voice message.

On November 11 in 2010 an intermittent set of phone conversations were accidentally transmitted and were recorded by a listener (at 1400 UTC) for a period of approximately 30 minutes. You can listen to them here: Link   and here is what seems to be a translation: Reddit  It seems that it was pretty much a Control Call but may have been accidentally transmitted or perhaps even intentionally who knows… well only they do.

24/26th January 2013 – From January 24 to January 26 UVB-76 (MDZhB) The Buzzer changed its messages type and sent a really weird message: OBYaVLENA KOMANDA 135 (Instruction has been announced 135. Apparently Buzzer was undergoing a special operation. If you listen to the below recording via youtube you can hear the broadcast.

It seems likely that this is either a military or government broadcast and as with most of these unless you know the specific code (and if it’s a one time pad etc.) you have no hope of working it out. Exactly as it should be really…

The mystery of the Somerton Man, an unidentified man was found dead on 1st December, 1948 at 6.60 am on Somerton beach in Adelaide, South Australia. In the man’s pockets was a scrap of paper with two words from The Rubaiyat, Taman Shud which in Persian means ‘ended’ or ‘unfinished’.

His death came at the time of heightened Cold War tension. He was carrying what might have been a secret code on the paper. There was no use of an identifiable poison, no identity to be garnered and then somewhere along the lines came the speculation of unrequited love.

Police were called to the man’s body that was lying on the sand, heads to the wall and his legs crossed pointing out to the sea. An unlit cigarette was behind his ear, and a half-smoked one that was on the right collar. The was a used bus ticket, unused train ticket and other small objects.

Witnesses had previously seen him, some saw him moving and the body had been left in place as some thought he was a drunken man that had passed out on the beach. He was taken back by the pathologist who assessed him, dressed in quality clothing but with no ID it was possibly a suicide. His teeth also did not match any dental records of someone from Australia.

The body of the mystery man was embalmed on 10th December 1948, The Advertiser newspaper at the time reported he might be a man named E C Johnson. E C Johnson however thwarted the plan by walking into a police station, quite obviously alive. Further suggestions have yet to have this mystery resolved. The body was buried at the West Terrace Cemetery, and the service conducted by The Salvation Army, some years after flowers began to appear at the grave.

Tamam Shud, the phrase, was written on a piece of paper torn from the back of the Rubaiyat. A search was conducted and the book was originally located, a man that wished to remain anonymous came forwards to say it had turned up in the back of his unlocked car. The missing paper did indeed come from that book.

So was he a spy? A suicide victim or was he murdered? More clues have since been added and speculation and investigation continues. The receptionist from the Strathmore Hotel said that a strange man has stayed in Room 21 around the time of the man’s death. He left 30th November 1948, in the room the cleaner found a black medical case and a hypodermic syringe.

In March 2009 Professor Derek Abbott of the University of Adelaide, and his team, began an attempt to solve the case, trying to crack the code and proposed and exhumation to test for DNA. So far this has been opposed by involved parties. The case continues to this day.

A numbers station is a short-wave radio station and is characterised by some unusual broadcasts. They are registered by those searching to be streaming out voices, numbers, words, tunes, morse codes or letters. They have been recorded in various languages and more commonly have female voices although male and children voices have been recorded in some situations. The Swedish Rhapsody broadcast features a child’s voice. They are not officially recognised by any government body, QSL responses have been received from these stations by short-wave listeners who sent reception reports to them. (A QSL is like a receipt of transmission from what I can understand).

An idea posed is that these stations are/were used to send out coded instructions. Encoded messages could be then used via a one time number pad system, e.g. a notebook with the relevant code break that could be destroyed one the transmission was done. It is safer than any other medium on the planet, even if you hear the code unless you know it you can’t decipher it. Theoretically anyone could pick up the code with access to short-wave radio and finding the frequency but knowing what it is, well that’s another story! Drug smugglers were another reason put forwards. The radio stations can be used but this might not be as effective as thought, after all the farms and outlying posts often associated with large scale drugs operations would not necessarily be able to receive the messages.

Another suggestion I had found leant more towards the paranormal, the idea that these are somehow messages that might have been an old broadcast some how replaying over the waves without anyone physically behind them. Perhaps the dead are using it to try and reach out, however if so why would they be so formulaic and not contain a direct message? Often with some of them you can hear background information too suggesting that even if it is not playing live it may well have been recorded as such.

Typically they seem to transmit on the hour or half hour, an introduction to identify the station will be heard and then the bulk of the message is heard.  This repeats for a set interlude and then the transmission will end, usually with an identifier such as a set of zero’s or perhaps music.  Listening to numerous ones quite often they seem heavy with interference, or background noise, some are overlapping with the regular broadcasts which means you can hear a second station on them.  A Florida radio station, WYFR from Okeechobee is a religious broadcasting station and reported that it was regularly affected by a Cuban/Spanish number station. Others have reported that they have encroached across their transmission too.

One thing I can be assured off, the Conet Project collects them and listening to them is both slightly creepy and mesmerising at the same time. Whatever they are used for (and I like the mystery so very much) they are a thrilling find if you haven’t heard of them before.

A map of the gas attacks.

Or the Anaesthetic Prowler/Mad Gasser of Roanoke as just a few names for example was given the title when the person/people performed a series of apparent gas attacks in Botetourt County, Virginia during the 1930’s. It was also a re occurrence for Mattoon in Illinois during the mid-40’s. Whether the cases are just mass hysteria or not an explanation for the events remain under debate. The reports ran between December 22, 1933 to February 1934.

The first people to report the gas attacks were Mr and Mrs Bert Kearney, 1408 Marshall Avenue and they said he was a tall, thin man with dark clothes and a tight fitting cap. Another report some weeks later described the gasser as being female dressed up as male. The gasser was said to carry a flit gun (pesticide tool).

The first report was in Haymakertown, Boutourt County, she reported an unusual odour at about 10pmn on 22nd Dec 1933 that made her feel sick, it returned again about half an hour later and they contacted the police. A third attack on the house happened around 1am and the whole house was affected with 8 occupants inside from the family and a guest.

The symptoms they had included headaches, nausea, facial swelling, constriction of the mouth and throat. Alice Huffman (daughter of Cal) stopped breathing and had to be resuscitated. She had several fits afterwards which the doctor attributed to be anxiety attacks, not the affects of the gas.

24th Dec, Cloverdale had a report from the Hall family that after they returned from church and detected a small that made them feel sick and weak. The police found a nail had been pulled from the rear window and that this may well have been where the gas had been injected into the property.

Dec 27th mother and son reported a similar event to thee Huffman and Hall cases. Then a fourth happened Jan 10th and then a second attack that night in Troutville. It is worth noting that several more were reported but police dismissed them as either hoaxes or possibly the effects of anxiety/hysteria.

The second spate was in Mattoon, Illinois and began late August 1944. Raef woke up to find that he was weak and sick, he suffered a fit of vomiting and then went to his wife who he found partially paralysed and unable to leave her bed. A similar report was made by a young mother.

September 1st there was a third report, she thought the smell was due to the flowers at first but changed her mind when she found that she was loosing feeling in her legs. There was no evidence of a prowler. Then her husband reported that he found someone snooping around but could not catch him, he gave a similar description to the original attacks of a tall man in dark clothes with a tight fitting cap.

A cloth was found at a victim’s home and was tested but nothing was found during testing. More reports were coming in and it caused an investigation that included the FBI. The local police also had to stop the locals from forming groups that were on patrol and fear was being raised that someone might discharge a firearm incorrectly and cause more problems. During this time there were more reports from footprints to tears in window screens, all of which appeared to be adding to the hype. By September the police had so many reports that they had to act, they made a statement that the incident was likely a result of public fear and women’s anxiety over the local men on war service. Interestingly enough it did decline after this.

Chief of Police C E Cole determined that there had been no gas attacks, the town had been sick with hysteria not gassing. There was, he felt, more likely an explanation in that the gas may well have been something carried over on the wind from the local industrial factory and that public panic had been more of the problem. In fact many of the symptoms such as nausea and choking, or even temporary paralysis are signs of shock/stress and other psychosomatic ailments.

There was another fear that it was due to Toxic Waste or pollution, it was possible that it was a release of something called Carbon Tetrachloride however the primary company involved in this allegation was Atlas-Imperial and they were adamant that they could not have carried enough of that in the factory to cause such widespread symptoms over the two areas. Also before the time of the gassing they had been certified safe by the State Department of Health.

Some researchers conclude that there is evidence there may have been some attacks by an actual assailant. It’s not clear if Botetourt and Mattoon are connected or that one is a copycat but the two ere nearly a decade apart and only affected the local area.

2003 saw a book by Scott Maruna, a former resident of Mattoon who feels that the attacks were due to a mentally disturbed man call Farley Llewellyn who was a chemistry student isolated from the community as he was believed to be homosexual. This was his notice and says that many of the attacks were within his local area. It was also claimed that the female gasser descriptions (more rare) were the work of his sisters to stop suspicion falling on him.
