Estes Park, California USA, a 140 room neo-gothic hotel which is famous for it’s hauntings. It was said to be the inspiration for Stephen King’s ‘The Shining’ and parts of the mini-series were filmed there. Many reports have been filed there, predominantly it seems most active around the ballroom.

Guests have reported hearing the piano play with no one inside, and employee;’s have linked it to Freedan O, Stanley’s wife. Apparitions have been reported on more than one occasion. Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures have both done ‘on location’ investigations with a mix of real life explanations and some unexplained experiences.

The so-called event occurred 20th May, 1867 when Stephen Michalak was searching for minerals at Falcon Lake  around 80 miles out from Winnepeg, Manitoba. Whilst searching around Michalak heard the cackling of geese and he looked up to see two glowing oval-shaped objects up on a swift descent. One carried on down and the other stopped, the one that went down was 160 feet away from him.

Naturally curious he went to investigate it, it looked like a bowl with a dome on top and there was a humming sound, along with the stench of sulphur. He said on the rim of the bowl he spotted a door and heard voices, he assumed they were humans but got no response even trying to use several languages.

With no response he ventured to look inside the strange craft, he described what he saw inside as a ‘maze of lights’ and then three panel doors closed it off, he moved back in in doing so put his hands on the outside of it the thing was so hot it burnt his gloves.

The craft took off abruptly it expelled hot air through some sort of gridded vent. The result of this was to set his shirt on fire and an onset of nausea with it. He was examined by doctors a few hours later back in Winnepeg who found burn marks consistent with his description of the vent.

His continuing health problems with the matter brought him back to the clinic a year later and investigators had not discovered any evidence of a hoax and by 1975 there was still no official response from the government. He died in 1999, aged 83 with no change or retractions in his claims.

The story of a missing woman has featured on The Oprah Winfrey a Show, 48 Hours, Unsolved Mysteries, A Current Affair and also America’s Most Wanted as it is believed she was kidnapped when she was reported missing on 20th September, 1988. She was near here home in Belen, New Mexico when the disappearance occurred.

The 19 year old followed her customary routine of a bike ride, where she told her mother to come and fetch her if she was not back by noon, her mother Patty Doel contacted the police when she could not find her. Her bike has never been found, and the only evidence of her in the area was her tape and some pieces of her walkman. A Ford pick-up might  have been part of the incident, it was seen by witnesses but this has never been located either.

A photograph then surfaced in 1989, it was of a young girl and boy. The girl was Tara Calico according to her mother and Scotland Yard but the Las Alamos National Laboratory did not agree and the FBI said it was inconclusive.

Twenty years after her disappearance the Valencia County Sheriff said he knew what had happened. Rene Riviera said that boys who had known her from school had driven up behind her and an accident had occured. When Calico died they covered up the crime, and Riviera even went so far as to say that he knew who they were but with no body or evidence he could not do anything more. Her father said the statement should not have been made, no one has been named and it sounds like conjecture without any facts to back it up. So far the mystery and case remain unsolved.

The author of the video does correct his mistake for the year she disappeared.

Minecraft is one of those games I know I’d get very addicted to, almost surely because of its free-form nature. I know they are working on the Lovecraftian server to build HPL’s monumental areas, and this just adds to the temptation!

Of course I can’t resist a good ghost tale, in or out of the real world so I’m going to write about the famous one in Minecraft, Herobrine. A now internet phenomena it was started by a screenshot of a distant and foggy figure on the minecraft forums.

The original poster stated that they had been coming across strange constructions in their single-player game. A suggestion that someone (or thing) was present in the game along with them. It went on to say that others had indeed been discovering this same strange event in their games (Creepypasta much?).

Post were then deleted or a simple ‘stop’ message would appear and the account involved was that of Herobrine. Investigations by the community were then made and one poster said that Herobrine was the username of a Swedish Gamer, and the brother of Minecraft’s designer, Notch. Notch confirmed he did have a brother who was ‘no longer with us’.

The reality of that last bit is that Notch has stated he has a half-brother who is very much alive, but they just don’t see each other that often. He said Herobrine does not exist and he has no intention of placing the ghost character in. However he does seem to love to add fuel to the fire by putting in mention of ‘Removed Herobrine’ from update notes for the game.

Fun times? Have you seen Herobrine?

The 18 (or 16 depending on your source) year old’s female skeleton lies in the cave of Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, two of her vertebrae are crushed. She was discovered in 1989 it’s an hours ride from San Ignacio, Beluze, and another hours walk through shallow rivers and jungle.

A series of skeleton’s are in the cave of the Mayan people ages from a year up to an adult. They are victims of ritual suicide and all tell different tales. Almost all have been killed via trauma to the head and the more famous is further into the cave, the Crystal Maiden.

Researchers think she may have died violently and been tossed into the cave, she has been there for around 1,100 years. She’s been there so long her bones have calcified leaving a sparkling and slightly plump look to them.

It is known as one of the few listed and protected places in the area. There are tours there and it is advised you need to be careful when you go, damage has occurred in the past and they are trying hard to preserve the area and the maiden inside.
